What constitutes a medical emergency?

Any of the following conditions should be considered an emergency:

1. A seizure lasting 15 minutes or more, or a chain of three within 24 hours
2. Repeated and frequent vomiting, or projectile diarrhea
3. A non-weight bearing lameness
4. A wound that goes all the way through the skin
5. A wound that is actively bleeding
6. Difficulty breathing, or open mouth breathing in cats
7. Constant coughing, or gagging
8. Loss of consciousness
9. Two hours of active labor during birth without a puppy or kitten being born
10. A sudden inability to walk, circling, or falling over repeatedly
11. A profound lethargy or reluctance to move
12. A lack of appetite for more than one day
13. Ingesting a toxin or a human drug
14. Being hit by a car or other serious trauma
15. A bleeding nose
16. A bloated abdomen
17. Hives or facial swelling

If your pet has a medical emergency during office hours please call us at 630-858-3530 to alert us to the situation so that we can prepare for your arrival. If you have a emergency outside of our regular office hours, we recommend that you contact one of the following 24 hour hospitals:
