With warmer weather just around the corner and the ground beginning to thaw, it’s time to talk fleas and ticks. Contrary to popular opinion, these pests aren’t just annoying. Fleas can transmit tapeworm and cause anemia, while ticks are well-known carriers of many harmful conditions, including Lyme disease.

Heartworm is another – and even graver – threat. Mosquitos can transmit the deadly worms to pets through just one bite. Sadly, many animals don’t show symptoms until the disease is advanced, if at all. While there is treatment for canines, it is expensive and can be very hard on your pet. (There is no heartworm cure for cats.)

Did you know that fleas can transmit tapeworm and cause anemia? And ticks are well-known carriers of many harmful conditions, including Lyme disease. Some of these conditions, including typhus and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, can even be transferred to people.

Heartworm is another – and even graver – threat to animals. Chicago in the spring and summer is a breeding ground for mosquitos, which can transmit the deadly worms to pets through just one bite. Sadly, many animals don’t show symptoms until the disease is advanced, if at all. While there is treatment for canines, it is expensive and can be very hard on your pet. At Glendale Hospital, we understand that year-round prevention is the only guarantee your pet won’t suffer an uncomfortable – or even life-threatening – infestation. That’s why we carry many different types of flea, tick, and heartworm preventives in our clinic. Not all preventatives are created equal. Two particularly effective products are Simparica and Nexgard.

Simparica is a chewable safe for dogs six months and older that prevents fleas and ticks for 35 days. That’s five days more than most monthly preventatives, meaning that if you forget to give your pet her monthly meds for a few days, she’s still protected.

Nexgard is also a chewable preventative that safeguards dogs from fleas and ticks. Nexgard is gentle on dogs’ sensitive systems and safe for puppies eight weeks and older. Because Simparica and Nexgard are both beef-flavored chews, dogs often mistake these chews for treats.

If you need to stock up on flea and tick preventatives, give us a call at 630-858-3530. We’ll be happy to recommend the product that meets your pet’s unique needs and lifestyle.
